What to Wear to a Pakistani Nikkah in the UK: The 2026 Guide for Brides, Family & Guests

The nikkah is the main part of a Muslim wedding. It is a special moment that is often photographed. Every bride wonders what to wear, and so do mothers, sisters, cousins, friends, and first-time guests. This guide helps everyone know what to wear, what to avoid, and how to fit in at a Pakistani nikkah, whether you are the bride or a guest.

What Happens During a Nikkah?

The nikkah is the marriage contract in Islam. It is the main part of a Muslim wedding. Other events like mehndi, baraat, and walima are celebrations around it. The ceremony is serious and based on faith, and the dress code shows that. An imam or qazi gives a short speech (the khutbah-e-nikkah), confirms the marriage proposal, and the bride and groom sign the marriage contract. Family members and witnesses also sign. Prayers are said, sweets are shared, and the couple is now married in their faith

Nikkah Dress Codes by Venue

Four nikkah venue settings side by side — a masjid prayer hall, a softly lit family living room, a hotel ballroom with chandeliers, and a UK registry office
Each venue sets a different dress code. Always ask before you order.

Before buying an outfit, ask where the nikkah will be held. The venue affects how modest you need to be, how much embellishment is okay, and how comfortable your shoes should be.

Masjid nikkah

This is the most formal venue. You should cover your arms and head, and avoid sheer fabrics. You will take off your shoes, so wear something easy to slip on. Choose modest fabrics like organza or silk, and avoid heavy beadwork.

Home or intimate nikkah

This is a more casual setting. A lightly embroidered shalwar kameez or a soft anarkali is great. Subtle decoration works best since the space is small.

Hotel or banqueting-hall nikkah

You can wear more decoration, especially in the evening. The bride can wear heavier outfits, and guests can choose deeper colors and bold jewelry. The lighting is warm, so metallic embroidery looks good in photos.

UK registry office nikkah

This is becoming common for couples who want both legal and religious ceremonies on the same day. The space is small and formal, so smart-modest dress is needed. A long shirt with pants or a tailored anarkali works well. Avoid full bridal lehengas.

Destination nikkah (Pakistan, UAE, Turkey)

The weather is important. In places like the UAE, choose light fabrics like organza, chiffon and tissue silk. Bring a lightweight shawl if you will take outdoor photos.

Nikkah Colours — What to Wear and What to Avoid

Flatlay of the 2026 nikkah colour palette — fabric swatches in ivory, champagne, blush pink, powder blue, pistachio, oyster grey, dusty rose and sage green
The traditional palette stays soft and luminous. 2026 simply opens it up a little.

Color is a common question about nikkah outfits. The traditional colors are soft and ceremonial, but in 2026, there are more options.

What is the best colour to wear to a nikah?

For brides, popular colors in 2026 are ivory, champagne, blush pink, powder blue, pistachio, oyster grey, and soft gold. These colors look good in photos and feel timeless. New colors for 2026 include dusty rose, sage green, muted mauve, terracotta, slate grey, and antique copper. These are modern but not too bright, and they suit deeper skin tones. For brides who don’t like pure ivory, oyster and antique champagne are softer choices.

What colours aren’t allowed at weddings? (Guest rules)

There are no strict religious rules, but there are cultural expectations:

  • Avoid heavy bridal reds with full zardozi work. Deep reds are for the bride at the baraat
  • Black is debated. It may be too serious at a traditional nikkah, but is accepted at modern ones.
  • Neon, hot pink and electric blue are not suitable for the nikkah ceremony.

What colour is the groom’s mum supposed to wear?

The groom’s mother should wear something that shows her importance without competing with the bride. Good choices are deep jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, plum, burgundy, bronze, and antique gold, in a nice style like a full anarkali or sharara. She can wear heavy decoration but should not match or outshine the bride.

What colour does the mother of the bride wear?

The same idea applies, plus a courtesy: the two mothers should quietly choose colors together so they look good in family photos. Soft gold, mauve, slate, antique rose, and deep teal are good options.

What are colours you don’t wear to a wedding?

In short: don’t wear what the bride is wearing, don’t wear anything louder than the bride, and don’t wear anything too casual.

Nikkah Outfits for the Bride

Three Pakistani brides in different nikkah silhouettes — a champagne sharara set, a blush anarkali, and an ivory maxi with back-train lehenga
Sharara, anarkali and maxi-with-lehenga — the three silhouettes that dominate 2026.

The bride’s nikkah outfit sets the mood for the whole event. The best outfits feel special but not too showy. They should look good in photos and be comfortable for sitting, standing, and being photographed for four hours.

The most flattering styles:

Three styles are popular for Pakistani nikkah outfits in 2026:

  • The sharara set a fitted or peplum top with flared pants. It looks classy and is great for photos.
  • The anarkalia long dress that flares out from the waist. It looks royal and suits many body types.
  • The maxi with farshi or back-train lehengafor brides who want a mix of drama and softness.

The gharara, which has wide legs and is tied at the knee, is also coming back this year, especially in jamawar and tissue silk.

Fabrics that look great in photos

The fabric makes a nikkah outfit beautiful. Look for silk, organza, raw silk, fine net, tissue silk, and crepe. These fabrics drape well, hold their shape, and look nice in photos.

Embellishment guide

The nikkah is for fine craftsmanship, not too much decoration. Dabka, tilla, zardozi, kora, pearl, and Swarovski work catch the light without being too much. Heavy mirror work and big sequins are better for the mehndi. Good designers focus on handwork around the neckline, sleeves, and dupatta border, keeping the rest of the outfit simple.

How to Drape a Dupatta for the Nikkah

Four-panel grid showing the classic single-shoulder drape, the V-drape across both shoulders, the head drape for the ceremony, and the double-dupatta style
Practise the drape before the day — don’t try to figure it out on camera.

The dupatta is the most photographed part of a nikkah look and is often styled incorrectly. Here are four drapes that always look good.

The classic single-shoulder drape

The dupatta goes over the left shoulder and falls down the back, with the border visible across the chest. This is best for shararas and peplum sets where the top is the focus.

The V-drape across both shoulders

Pinned at both shoulders, the dupatta forms a soft V across the chest. This is the best look for an anarkali because it highlights the neckline.

The head drape

For the nikkah moment, Pakistani brides often drape the dupatta over their head. It's best to stitch it in place.

The double dupatta

One dupatta drapes the body, and a second, lighter one covers the head. This is popular for brides who want a heavily decorated dupatta while keeping a softer veil for prayer.

Securing the drape

Use matching pins, fashion tape, or discreet stitches. If the dupatta is heavy, ask your tailor to add small loops at the shoulder seams so the dupatta can hook in place.

Nikkah Outfits for the Groom

Couples choose colors that match in tone - an ivory groom and a champagne bride.

Pakistani grooms have four traditional looks for the nikkah, each with a different feel.

Kurta pajama

This is the most popular look. It includes a long kurta pajama with straight trousers, often in ivory, off-white, beige, or pale gold. It’s easy to wear, comfortable, and looks good in photos.

Sherwani

This is the most traditional choice. It’s a knee-length sherwani made of raw silk or jamawar, worn with a kurta and churidar or straight trousers. It looks best with a matching dupatta or stole and a turban for a baraat-style nikkah.

Prince coat

This is a shorter, tailored option, similar to a Nehru jacket. It’s modern and great for a registry-office nikkah or a small hotel ceremony.

Waistcoat sets

This look includes a kurta with an embroidered or contrasting waistcoat. It’s the most relaxed option, perfect for a home or intimate nikkah.

Coordinating with the bride

Most couples match by tone, like an ivory groom with a blush bride or a beige groom with a sage bride. Exact matching can look stiff in photos.

What the Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom Wear

The mother of the bride and mother of the groom in coordinated jewel-tone anarkalis, photographed together at the nikkah
Mothers often coordinate their outfits so they look good in family photos.

They are important figures and are photographed a lot.

Best styles for mothers

Flowing anarkalis, structured shararas, Peshwas and lehenga sets, and elegant gowns with dupattas work well. Their outfits should hold their shape since they move around a lot during the ceremony.

Color and embellishment

Mothers can wear deeper jewel tones with some handwork, but not too much. They can dress beautifully since it’s their celebration too, but they shouldn’t outshine the bride.

Dupatta styling for older women

A heavier dupatta draped elegantly looks better than a casual style. Some customers ask for an extra panel for more weight and drape.

Featured designers for mothers at Maria Faisal

Popular labels for mothers include Emaan Adeel for chiffon and net, Baroque for structured anarkalis, Maria B for jamawar and velvet, and Sana Safinaz for modern styles. Check the mother-of-the-bride section for options.

What the Bride’s Sisters, Sisters-in-Law and Friends Wear

The bridal party should support the bride’s look without competing.

Coordinating without competing

If the bride is in ivory and powder blue, the bridal party might wear pale blue shararas, blush anarkalis, or soft pistachio sets. They should coordinate, not match.

Best styles for sisters

Shararas, ghararas, peplum-and-lehenga sets, long shirt with shararas and embroidered anarkalis are great choices. They should dress more decoratively since they are close to the bride.

When to wear bolder colours?

At an evening hotel nikkah, deeper colors like rose pink or emerald are fine for sisters and friends. For a daytime masjid nikkah, softer colors are better.

What Guests Wear to a Pakistani Nikkah

Three Pakistani nikkah guest looks side by side — a pastel shalwar kameez, a soft anarkali with single-shoulder dupatta drape, and a sharara in dusty rose
Modest, ceremonial, soft palette, no ivory

If you’re reading this, you’re likely invited to a Pakistani nikkah and want to dress appropriately. Here’s a quick guide.

The guest dress code at a glance

Modest, ceremonial, soft palette, no ivory. That’s it. Any outfit that meets these four points is suitable.

What to wear to a Pakistani nikkah as a guest

For guests, an embroidered shalwar kameez, a soft anarkali, a sharara, or a long shirt and trouser set in a nice pastel or muted jewel tone is best. Light embellishments are good; full bridal sparkle is not.

What guests wear to a nikkah ceremony?

At every nikkah I've been to, guests who look good have three things in common: a soft dupatta, nice fabric (like organza, chiffon, raw silk, or premium lawn), and simple jewelry.

What to wear to a Pakistani wedding as a guest in the UK?

In the UK, a stitched shalwar kameez or anarkali set in soft pastel colors is popular. Ready-to-wear Pakistani designer suits are great because you can order and wear them quickly. Maria Faisal offers over 100 Pakistani designer brands with fast delivery

Footwear and bags

Choose stylish khussas, soft block heels, or nice flats. A small potli bag or a clutch works well; avoid large handbags. Check our guest nikkah edit for options.

What to Wear to a Pakistani Nikkah as a Non-Muslim or White Guest

A non-Muslim guest in a modest sage-green midi dress with three-quarter sleeves and a soft scarf draped over the shoulders, standing at a nikkah venue
Wear a modest midi or maxi dress in a soft color, and bring a scarf for a masjid ceremony.

You don’t have to wear Pakistani clothes, but you can if you want. Just be respectful of the modesty and the ceremony.

Western options that work

  • A modest midi or maxi dress in a soft color with long or three-quarter sleeves and a high neckline.
  • A tailored jumpsuit with sleeves or a two-piece in soft colors.
  • A long skirt with a nice top, especially with a scarf.

Avoid bare shoulders, low necklines, short dresses, and sheer panels. Cocktail dresses for a registry wedding are usually too revealing for a nikkah.

Pakistani options that work

If you want to wear Pakistani clothes, your hosts will appreciate it. A ready-to-wear kameez set, a soft anarkali, or a kurti with palazzo trousers are easy choices. You can tuck the dupatta over one shoulder.

Head covering for non-Muslim guests

If the nikkah is at a masjid, bring a scarf. You don’t need to wear it before the ceremony, but it’s good to have for the religious part. If it’s at a hotel, wearing a head covering is up to you.

Footwear notes

If you’re going to a masjid, wear shoes that are easy to take off. Avoid lace-up boots and anything tricky. For a hotel, dress shoes are fine.

What to avoid as a non-Muslim guest

Don’t wear bare shoulders, backless dresses, very short dresses, sneakers, or jeans. A simple, modest dress in a soft color is always a safe choice.

Hijab and Abaya for the Nikkah

Layer the hijab in a matching color underneath, with an embroidered dupatta on top.

Do I have to wear hijab during the nikkah?

For Muslim women, wearing hijab at a nikkah is often expected. Whether to wear it for the whole event or just the ceremony depends on personal choice and family traditions. Many brides who don’t wear hijab daily will drape the dupatta over their head for the ceremony and take it off for photos.

Bridal hijab styling

The best bridal hijab looks layer the hijab and dupatta together — the hijab in a matching color underneath, with the dupatta draped over. A maang tikka or matha patti sits on the forehead, not on the hijab, so plan the hijab style around the jewelry.

Can I wear an abaya to a nikkah?

Yes, stylish, embellished abayas are popular for guests and some brides. A pearl-embroidered open abaya over a long dress, with a matching hijab, can look very elegant. For guests, a nice embellished abaya in a soft color is a great choice.

Hijab-friendly designer cuts

Look for high necklines, full sleeves, and dupattas that stay in place over a hijab. Many customers ask for longer sleeves or higher necklines during custom stitching, and these changes are free.

Nikkah Outfits for Children

Mini versions of the adult outfits — focus on comfort.

At a nikkah, kids are often photographed as much as the couple, and Pakistani families like to dress them nicely.

Girls

Mini lehengas, shararas, frocks, and embroidered kurta sets are great. Soft pastel colors match the adult outfits and look good in photos. Comfort is key — avoid scratchy fabrics and heavy decorations that can be annoying.

Boys

A small kurta pajama, a waistcoat with a shirt, or a mini sherwani for close family works well. Use soft fabrics and avoid anything that needs a lot of adjusting.

What NOT to Wear to a Nikkah

A do-and-don't comparison graphic — on the left, an ivory cocktail dress with bare shoulders crossed out in red; on the right, a modest gold anarkali ticked in green
The single most universal rule: never wear the colour the bride is wearing.

What is not appropriate to wear as a wedding guest?

  • Heavy bridal reds with full zardozi. These are for the bride at the baraat.
  • Sheer panels, backless cuts, plunging necklines, strapless cuts. Especially at a masjid nikkah.
  • Full bridal sparkle as a guest. Don’t outshine the bride.
  • Sneakers, jeans, casual flats, beachwear. The nikkah is formal.
  • Loud prints. The mood is calm and ceremonial.
  • All-black at a traditional family nikkah. It’s okay at modern hotel nikkahs but not at home or masjid ceremonies.

What is something you never wear as a wedding guest?

The main rule is to avoid anything that draws too much attention.

What not to wear to a wedding, it’s said?

The old advice is to avoid white, black for mourning, and red to stand out. In Pakistan, this means don’t wear deep bridal red (bridal), or anything that seeks more attention than the ceremony.

Seasonal Nikkah Dressing in the UK

A seasonal grid of four Pakistani nikkah outfits — summer organza in blush, autumn raw silk in mauve, winter velvet in burgundy and a spring tissue silk in pistachio
The fabric matters, not just the color.

British weather affects what to wear. Here’s how to dress for each season.

Spring and summer (May–August)

Use organza, chiffon, tissue silk, and premium lawn for warm weather. Keep decorations light so the outfit isn’t heavy. Soft pastels look best in natural light.

Autumn (September–November)

Raw silk, jamawar, and crepe are good choices. Colors can be deeper—mauve, sage, dusty rose, and antique copper. A matching shawl is helpful for outdoor events.

Winter (December–February)

Velvet, jamawar, and heavier raw silks keep you warm. Colors can be bronze, burgundy, deep plum, and emerald. A matching embroidered shawl is important for masjid arrivals—you can take it off for the ceremony but will appreciate it later.

Jewellery and Accessories for the Nikkah

Flatlay of nikkah jewellery and accessories — polki choker, rani haar, maang tikka, jhoomar, embellished gold khussas and a small potli bag
Choose one main piece: a heavy neckline can have a maang tikka; a clean neckline can have a layered choker and rani haar.

Jewellery

Polki, kundan and pearl are great choices. Polki and kundan work well with heavier necklines; pearl and minimal gold look nice with simpler necklines. If your outfit is heavily decorated, a statement earring and maang tikka may be enough; with a simpler outfit, layer a choker with a longer rani haar.

Maang tikka, matha patti and jhoomar

Choose one for your forehead, not all three. The maang tikka is classic; the matha patti adds flair; the jhoomar (side-pinned) looks great in photos.

Shoes

Wear embellished khussas, soft block heels, or decorated flats. Comfort is most important—you’ll be on your feet for a long time.

Bags

Use a small potli bag or a structured clutch in a matching color. Carry only what you need.

Perfume

Choose scents like oud, rose, and jasmine for the ceremony. Avoid fresh or aquatic scents—the nikkah calls for warmth.

Hair and Makeup to Match Your Nikkah Outfit

A nikkah look is complete when your outfit, jewelry, hair, and makeup all match.

The fresh nikkah look

Soft, glowing skin, defined eyes, and a natural lip. This look is timeless and won’t go out of style like heavy makeup. Save the bold looks for the walima.

Hair under a dupatta drape

A low bun or soft side-swept hair keeps the focus on your face and shows off the maang tikka. If you wear the dupatta on your head, style your hair to fit the drape.

Hijab-friendly hair and makeup

Focus on your eyes and lips since they are visible. Well-groomed brows, lashes, a soft smoky eye, and a deeper lip look great with a hijab and dupatta.

Photography Tips

Photos are memories of the day. Here are some tips from years of styling brides for pictures.

How mirror work and sequins look in flash

Big mirror work and large sequins can look like white spots in photos. Smaller mirror work, fine sequins and metallic thread embroidery (dabka, tilla, zardozi) photograph far more cleanly.

Matte vs shiny embellishment

Matte gold and silver look warm and soft in photos; shiny sequins can look cold and flashy. The best bridal photos usually have matte details.

Colors that look good

Ivory, champagne, blush, antique gold, sage and oyster grey look great in pictures. Bright colors like neon, hot pink and electric blue look outdated.

Indoor vs outdoor lighting

A color that looks good in daylight may look different under indoor lights. If possible, check your outfit in the venue’s lighting before the event.

Common Nikkah Outfit Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don’t wait too long to order custom outfits. Custom stitching requires 6–8 weeks.
  • Don’t choose heavy pieces for a small ceremony. Match the outfit to the venue.
  • Remember the dupatta is for your head, not just your shoulder.  Plan the drape from the start.
  • Don't ignore venue lighting. Pastels can look different under warm lights.
  • Don't skip the final fitting. Even custom pieces need a last check two weeks before.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are questions our customers often ask that are not fully answered above, mainly about ceremony details, gifts, and how a Pakistani nikkah is different from a typical British wedding.

How long is a nikkah ceremony?

The ceremony usually lasts 30–45 minutes. This includes the imam’s speech, the proposal and acceptance, signing the contract, and the closing prayer. The whole event, with arrival, food, photos, and goodbyes, usually takes two to four hours. A nikkah at a mosque is usually shorter, while one at a hotel or banquet hall is longer.

What is the money given at a nikkah called?

Cash gifts from guests are often called salami or shagun in Pakistani culture.

What gifts are given at a nikkah?

The most important gift is the mahr from the groom to the bride. The groom’s family usually gives the bride her nikkah outfit (jora), gold jewelry, and a ring. Guests give salami envelopes, and the bride’s family often gives the groom a watch, ring, or sherwani in return.

What’s the difference between a nikkah and a walima?

The nikkah is the religious marriage contract marking when the couple is married. The walima is the celebration hosted by the groom’s family afterward. They can happen on the same day or weeks apart. The dress codes are different: the nikkah is more modest, while the walima allows for more glamorous outfits.

Can I wear the same outfit to the nikkah and another wedding event of same wedding?

It is possible, but not common. If you must, choose an outfit that can be styled differently. For example, a soft anarkali can be worn with one set of jewelry for the nikkah and a different accessory for a smaller event. For brides, it’s mandatory to have a separate nikkah outfit so each event has its own look.

Can you wear jeans to a wedding in the UK?

At most British weddings, no. Invitations usually suggest a smart dress code. At a Pakistani nikkah, jeans are never appropriate, no matter how casual the venue is. The ceremony is religious, so the dress code is always more formal than a British wedding.

What is the dress code for a British wedding?

A traditional British wedding can range from formal morning suits (top hat and tails) to smart day dresses or knee-length cocktail dresses for guests. Hats and fascinators are common at church weddings, while lounge suits and midi dresses are typical at civil ceremonies. Black tie is for evening receptions.

What do people wear to weddings in the UK?

At a typical British wedding, women usually wear a midi or knee-length dress with sleeves, a smart jumpsuit, or a tailored two-piece. Men wear lounge suits in navy, charcoal, or beige with a tie. At a Pakistani wedding in the UK, the dress code is embroidered shalwar kameez, anarkali, sharara, kurta pajama, or sherwani, or a modest Western outfit for non-Pakistani guests.
